The job: A leading business and management publisher, with a highly respected international list of titles catering for the professional, business and student markets is seeking to appoint a Publishing Director. Reporting to the Managing Director, the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the smooth operation of the company’s publishing including establishing long and short-term goals and objectives; creating and maintaining a strategic 3-year schedule of new products; and taking responsibility for the sales contribution of both frontlist and backlist titles. Key aspects of the role include developing an international best-selling list of professional titles; key author and organisational relationships; commissioning of international high-level professional titles; and advising on publishing strategy regarding markets and communities. Other aspects of the role include digital development, editorial quality control, marketing development and cost control.

The person: Candidates will need substantial experience of publishing programme planning and management, preferably gained within a B2B, Academic, Educational or STM publishing environment. The person appointed will be profit-focused, with experience of financial accountability, including forecasting and budgeting. The ability to quickly gain a thorough understanding of the publishing needs, current trends and market conditions in the professional information sector will be important aspects of this key role. Effective staff management and team leadership, together with confident communication; interpersonal and presentation skills; a positive, results-oriented approach to planning and task management; plus high commitment and determination, are all essential attributes required for this role.
