The job: A major international publisher of STM books and journals scientific/technical magazines and newsletters is looking to appoint a Commercial Editor to join one of their leading magazine brands in Science and Engineering. Reporting to the Publisher the job holder will be responsible for effectively and innovatively overseeing the publication, development and brand management of the magazine, its website and associated products. The role will combine a strategic editorial role on the magazine with a hands-on webmaster role responsible for commissioning and preparation of content for websites. Other responsibilities will include managing and developing the scientific and editorial content of the magazine brand and for quality control and editorial costs. This is a commercial role with an aim of ensuring revenue, profit and growth are maximised and will include proactively engaging with advertisers/vendors to drive development of new branded products and revenues and working with marketing / sales to increase website traffic. The person: Candidates will need degree level education in an area of the physical sciences along with experience of working effectively in a journalistic role in a B2B or STM publishing environment. Sound feature commissioning, writing and interviewing skills and broad knowledge of relevant scientific sectors is also required. Candidates will also need knowledge of STM publishing and / or other B2B industries along with good understanding of the commercial dynamics of advertising, subscription and licensed business models. Experience of budgeting coupled with financial awareness and the ability to develop long-term product plans and objectives is also essential.
